We get asked so many questions about websites. And let’s face it, without a quality website, your company has as much credibility as a supermarket tabloid. So, how do you create a website that is interesting and informative, and will entice visitors to return often?

Here are a few dos and don’ts when it comes to putting together a professional website. Most of these tips are aimed at service businesses, but you’ll want to include some of the same information on other sites as well. We’ll tackle tips for product-oriented sites in future blogs.

Domain Name
– Use the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) method when brainstorming an original domain name. No punctuation, easy to remember, simple to spell and – above all -- consistent with the name of your business.

Header – Image is everything, especially on the Internet. You must have a professional looking header which MUST include your logo, phone number and your tag line. Your header is the first thing a user will see, so make sure you make a lasting impression.

About Us – This is a great way to introduce your business. Not only does it allow users to find out much more “about you,” it’s a way for you to toot your own horn without sounding too conceited. Try to add some interesting tidbits about some of the people at your company (where they are from, where they went to school, talents or hobbies). This allows users to see a more personal side of your employees.

Our Services
– Let ‘em know what you do. Be sure to write it TO somebody. So instead of saying “we offer fast service,” say “we provide fast results for you.”

Contact Us – “If you build it they will call.” A contact us page can’t be forgotten. Include your name and number (obviously) and also an email address for any contact person at your company. You can also ask for specific information (see our contact page for ideas).

Overall, make sure your website contains 2 key qualities. It must be professional (if your website looks sloppy, your company will look sloppy). And it must be original (don’t use a canned web design). If you want to see examples of really bad sites, check out www.webpagesthatsuck.com. It will either make you feel better about your own site – or send you running to the phone to call us!

We’ll tell you what we think of your site. Send us your link and we’ll tell you if it makes the grade.
